Legacy Sonicorbiter OS v2.5 - v2.9 FAQ
These answers are for units running Sonicorbiter OS 3.0 and later. If your unit still runs an older version (v2.9 or earlier), use the legacy FAQ linked above.
From any computer, phone or tablet on the same network, go to sonicorbiter.com and click Manage device next to your unit. The unit has to have reached the internet in the last day or so to be listed there, and a VPN on your computer can hide it.
You can also type the unit's own address into your browser, for example http://sonore-ab12.local for a Rendu player or http://sonictransporter-ab12.local for a sonicTransporter. The four characters at the end are your unit's own ID, shown on sonicorbiter.com.
Open your unit's web page and click Software Manager. It checks for a new version when it opens. If an update is available, click Install, then Confirm install. The unit downloads the update, writes it and restarts by itself, which can take several minutes.
Updates never install on their own, and your settings, music and sign-ins are kept.
Your unit keeps the previous version alongside the new one. If the new version does not start properly, the unit goes back to the previous one by itself. You can also switch back by hand with Boot other slot in Software Manager.
Every drive your sonicTransporter has mounted is shared on your network. On Windows, open \\sonictransporter-ab12\InternalStorage (using your unit's own name) in File Explorer. On a Mac, use Finder → Go → Connect to Server and enter smb://sonictransporter-ab12.local. USB drives and the Drive Bay appear as shares of their own.
The user name is sonicorbiter and the default password is password. The web page will remind you to change it until you do.
Use Drive Manager on the unit's web page to set up Internal Storage, mount a USB drive or the Drive Bay, import files from a USB drive or make a backup to one.
exFAT works best, and Drive Manager can format a drive as exFAT for you (this erases it). FAT, NTFS, Linux ext and Mac HFS+ drives also work. Mac APFS drives can be read but not written to.
On your unit's web page, apps that are playing or ready are under Active and the rest are under Available. Tap an app under Available to switch to it. Only one player app can use your DAC at a time. Tap the active app to change its settings, such as its name or volume control.
Rendu players start out set to Roon Ready. A sonicTransporter starts with no player app and its player apps hidden, since it is usually used as a server. To use one, show it in System Settings → Player Apps and Tools.
Roon Core Server is already turned on when your sonicTransporter arrives. On its first start with an internet connection it downloads Roon, which takes a few minutes, and after that it updates itself. Everything else is done in the Roon app. Internal Storage is added to Roon as a music folder automatically. If Roon Core Server has been turned off, turn it back on in System Settings → Server Apps.
More help with Roon, including moving your Roon Core from a computer and reinstalling Roon, is Here
Check that Roon Ready is under Active on the player's web page. Then, in the Roon app, go to Settings → Audio and enable the player. The player and your Roon Core must be on the same network.

Open System Settings → Server Apps and turn on HQPlayer Embedded. Tap its icon to open HQPlayer's own web page. The default login is hqplayer / password. You need an HQPlayer licence key, which you upload on HQPlayer's Key page. Without one, playback stops after the trial period. HQPlayer Embedded needs a newer processor, so it is not offered on some older sonicTransporters.
To use a Rendu player as the HQPlayer endpoint, switch the player to HQPlayer NAA.
On a sonicTransporter, turn on BubbleUPnP Server in System Settings → Server Apps. It makes Chromecast devices available to UPnP control apps such as BubbleUPnP.
Tap the active player app and set Volume Control. None plays at full volume without any change to the audio, so use it when you have a preamp or a DAC with its own volume knob. Hardware uses your DAC's own volume, when the DAC has one. Roon, HQPlayer and Plex set volume in their own apps.
Yes. Turn on Beta Software in System Settings, then use Software Manager as usual. We do not recommend beta software for everyday listening, because it can be unstable. Turning beta off offers you the latest release again.
Restore Factory Defaults in System Settings resets all player settings, clears mconnect passwords, stops the server apps and switches to the Music Demo player. Your music library is kept.
The unit's network name (for example sonore-ab12) is fixed, but you can rename each player app in its settings. The unit gets its IP address from your router, so set a reserved address there if you need one. The unit only has a wired Ethernet connection. If there is no Ethernet where your system is, a pair of powerline adapters is a good fix. More on choosing and setting them up Here
While the problem is happening, click Generate a log under System Status on the unit's web page and download it. Then use the Questions? Talk to a human button on smallgreencomputer.com and include the log.
Make sure your music collection is organized before you import it into Roon or other music software.
